We always support adoption of a pet from a shelter or rescue whenever possible. This reduces the demand for puppy mills. According to the Humane Society of the United States, on average 15,000 to 20,000 dogs and cats are taken in at animal shelters every day across the U.S. These adorable and loving animals are just waiting to find their new home.
Seeing dozens, if not hundreds of adorable puppies and dogs at one time can make your head spin, so plan your visit carefully. While you want to make an emotional connection, you also need to engage your rational brain in the process. Try and learn as much as you can about the history of the dog. Research what type of breeds are a good fit for your family and lifestyle. Ask if a rescued puppy was surrendered with litter mates or has a bonded partner. Ask if the puppy is a stray or given up by the owner. Is the dog potty or crate trained? How does the dog behave around other animals or children? Does the dog guard its food or toys?
Remember, you are bringing this pet home for life. Take your time and make an educated and rational decision.
