There are a lot of things to consider when looking for a new pet.

Purchase from a pet store, purchase from a breeder or rescue. We lean towards rescuing pets because with modern technology there are several rescues that specialize in specific breeds.  So if you know what breed you want, you can look at several all in one place. In addition the cost is lower and you are saving a life.

If you work with a pet store, get as much information as you can about where the pet came from and their history. Some breeds are prone to certain health issues. Some family lines are worse, and you don’t ant to get a pet that will be needing thousands of dollars of medical expenses in the first five years of their life.

If you are looking a breeders, do some research on them. Speak to people who have previously worked with them as references on their experiences. Most of all, make sure they are not a puppy mill.

That type of dog or pet? Consider your lifestyle. Are you at work ten hours a day? Do you have children? Do you live in a condo? Look at breeds that fit into your lifestyle. If you are out of the home for ten hours a day, its not a good idea to get a breed that is high energy. Cats are very independent and are a great choice. If you want a dog, pomeranians sleep a lot and are great for condo living.
