All often we choose a dog based on “how cute he is” and don’t give a lot of thought to the breed and their needs. Some questions you need to ask yourself before choosing a new pet are:

  1. Do you have allergies?
  2. Do you travel often?
  3. Does the breed shed?
  4. Is the breed high energy?
  5. Is the breed easy to train?
  6. Do you have space for a big dog?

These are just some of the basics. We live in a condo and work away from home during the week. Because of that we chose Pomeranians. We adopted two so they have each other to keep company and play with / burn off some energy. They are small so the condo is a lot of space for them. They are okay being indoors and with less time on walks with us. They love to just be near us and are easy to train.

As a child we had Shepards and Collies. I grew up on a farm and that made sense. The dogs were bigger and had room to run. They are both hearding breeds and enjoyed playing with the chickens and other animals.

There are lots of resources, read up and find the right breed for you. When you do, you’ll find a happy home and stronger bond with your pet.
