What are your thoughts on crate training?
A lot of people think of a crate as punishment or confinement for a dog and hate the idea. Behaviorally speaking, a crate is a sanctuary and a safe place that is theirs. Keeping that in mind, you cannot use it as a punishment.
To get started, make the space comfortable and put something that has your scent in the crate. Give them treats and rewards when they go in their crate. We feed our kids in their crates.
We do not put water in their crates. Because they are locked in, if they drink too much they cannot get out to relieve themselves.
Our fur kids will go in and sleep in their crates during the day when the crate door is open.
When we leave and put them in their crates, make it a good experience. We give them treats when we leave and when we arrive. We have had to train them to not bark in their crates and that is often done by repeatedly putting them in, giving them a treat, closing the door, giving them a treat, covering the crate with a blanket and giving them a treat. We repeat this process several times a day. They pick up on it and after time they lose training and we have to circle back.
