Tethering is when you have a dog leash that is attached to you. Usually it goes around your waste so you can turn without getting wrapped up in the leash. It’s a great way to teach your dog to move with and around you. It is suggested to start inside in close spaces like unloading the dishwasher. You will make a lot of small movements and your dog will quickly learn how to move with and around you. Then graduate to outside walks. Some dog owners use this method of leashing only. Once outside the dog remains in your proximity, but not under your feet. There will be tests and distractions. Use treats as rewards and distractions. Eventually your dog will learn to stay near you and you won’t need a leash at all.
