When you get a new puppy Tethering is a great way to help you bond with your new pet. It’s simple, using a carabiner attach the handle of the leash to a belt loop on your pants. Give your pets often when you start out for demonstrating good behavior. Tethering will teach your dog to stay close to you and to read your body language. So when you start walking, they will come with you. You can do it often and in the home when doing every day activities like unloading the dishwasher. After a while when you take your pet outside on a normal leash, they will stay close automatically and pay attention to your body language. After some time you can remove the leash all-together.
If your dog jumps on you, attach the leash to a door and approach her. Giver her treats when she does not jump on you. Repeat the process until you get the desired behavior. Then go back and attach the leash to your belt.
Advanced training options are to have other family members give the pet a treat or attention while she is tethered to you and walk away. She should stay with you when they leave. If she does, reward her with another treat. You can also slowly introduce other distractions like noises, toys, etc. The goal is to have a calm dog that stays by your side.
