When it comes to new pets, their success in your home is highly dependent on their environment. If you have children, its just as important to teach your kids what is expected and how to treat your new pet as it is to train your new pet.

Remember, your new pet is in a new environment and may be scared. It will take them some time to learn their new surroundings and the rules. Make sure your children ask permission (from the pet) to pet or play with it. Make sure they move slow and are calm when they approach your new pet. Your new pet will pick up on their energy and could get scared or aggressive.

Let the dog sleep, when it needs to sleep. New puppies are like teenagers and need as much as 16 hours of sleep a day to properly develop.

Stay out of the puppy’s crate. That is their personal area and their safe area. Children cannot play in or with the puppy in the crate area.

No feeding or treats without permission. Children will share any food they have with their pet and this could cause two problems. One is that the food could be harmful to the pet and upset their stomach. Two is that they are teaching the pet to come to them every time they have food. After a week, you could easily develop a problem where the pet is continually begging every time there is food out.
