When training a puppy, is there a place for punishment?

In general, punishment is an option when training a new puppy. It’s important to measure the personality of the puppy and alter the punishment to their personality. Punishment used in the wrong way can cause fear, anxiety and trust issues. Remember you are your dog’s guardian, they cannot be scared of you.

When using punishment make sure timing is on. You need to catch the act that you want to correct and punish them right then and there so they associate the behavior with the punishment.

Start slow… punishment can be as simple as using a stern or raised voice. Never lock a dog in their crate for punishment, you don’t want them to associate the punishment with their crate which is their safe place.

Consult a professional trainer for more information on your breed.
