One of the most common questions we get is how to potty train a puppy. Like any training you need to find out what motivates your puppy. In most cases its treats and praise. The second most important thing is to be consistant. So, whatever you do, always do it and make sure your whole household is doing the same thing.
We start by establishing routines. So, let your puppy out last thing before you leave and first thing when you get home. When you are home try and establish consistant routines, like letting them out first thing in the AM, after you eat breakfast and feed them, before you eat lunch and feed them, before dinner and when you feed them, and before bed time. So they know when to expect to be let out.
Its very important in the beginning of training and in the puppy stages to reward them and put a word to the action. We use “potty” for #1 and “two two” for number 2. Say it several times when you go out; “Prim go potty”. When your puppy goes, praise them and give them a reward. Do the same for #2. Even after they learn, continue to do it. This will help them remember, so if you are on vacation for example and out of routine, they will be able to follow the verbal commands. Our little boy will not go #1 on cement… unless you say “Finnick potty”. Then he knows it is okay.
