If you have a new pet, talk to your children on the basics. Of course, it’s easier with the older kids. Some things to discuss…

  • Ask permission before approaching any pet. If it’s your own pet, make sure the pet is aware that they are approaching, so they don’t spook the pet.
  • Stay calm – pets feed off of your energy. Staying calm will keep the pet calm.
  • Get Help – If there is a problem, ask a parent for help.
  • Keep the pet enclosed or on a leash – Pets are escape artists, so always keep them on leash or enclosed.
  • Never use physical punishment -You could hurt the pet, or they could hurt you back.
  • No feeding – only feed the pet at scheduled dinner time with normal dinner.. not your leftovers!
  • Stay of out of the crate – Your pets crate is their safe place. Let it be their safe place and not a play area.
