If you choose to go the pure bread route the first thing you need to understand is the difference between good breeders and bad ones. Some unscrupulous people set up puppy farms and breed dogs for a cash crop. Many pet stores purchase from puppy mills, so it’s always best to go directly to a breeder. Take some time and educate yourself on the breeder you are considering. Check and see how they treat their animals. How many times they are breed until they are retired. What medical care is provided before the sale and of course check references. You can check to see if they are AKC certified and ask what veterinarian they use and talk to that veterinarian for more info.

Most good breeders will want to qualify you as a good home for their pets. A red flag is when they are not concerned about your experience and how you will care for the pet. A good breeder will match you with a puppy. They will expect as much of you as you do of them.

When you do buy from a reputable breeder, they usually have a contract. Make sure you read the contract. They often do not accept returns if you change your mind and may have a clause that says you must keep the pet for a minimum of one year.

Once you have found a good breeder, be prepared to wait. A sign of a good breeder is that they have a waitlist.

We wish you the best of luck on your journey!
